报告摘要:
Last February the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration made headlines with the announcement of the first detection of a gravitational wave signal. That was the result of a 25-year long quest that has involved thousands of researchers in the US and Europe and beyond. During the first engineering run of the two Advanced LIGO detectors, gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers were observed for the first time. A full search for black hole mergers in this data identified two events, GW150914 and GW151226, both of which were unambiguously observed with a significance of greater than 5s.
Both GW150914 and GW151226 provide an unprecedented opportunity to study the two-body motion of a compact-object binary in the large velocity, highly nonlinear regime. Rates based on the observation of the two signals, 8–250Gpc-3 yr-1, indicate that future runs of the advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors will lead to many more observations. With their announcement of the first detection, the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration have thus demonstrated the viability of gravitational astrophysics.
Design, technical solutions and scientific achievements of the LIGO and Virgo projects will be presented at a non-specialist level.
